Tourist accommodation in Spain when planning a vacation
More and more Spanish residents are opting for tourist accommodation when planning their holidays. This is evidenced by the latest report prepared by the University of Salamanca for HomeAway, a residential rental agency. In the period from March 2018 to the present, 29 million Spaniards have used tourist accommodation, which is 7 million more than in the same period in 2017. Thus, there is a sharp increase in the popularity of such housing.
According to data published by V Barómetro del Alquiler Vacacional en España (2018), tourists spent 2.15 billion euros on rental housing in 2017. For comparison - in the year before last, this amount was 1.685 billion euros.
If we add other expenses incurred by tourists during their holidays (shopping, entertainment and transport) to the money spent on renting housing, then the contribution to the local economy will amount to 62 billion euros in 2017 alone.
"This significant contribution is due to the large cash spending of foreign tourists," explained Juan Carlos Fernandez-Perez, CEO of HomeAway South Europe. "We estimate that approximately 64% of tourist accommodation tenants in Spain are foreigners." Also, according to him, the average rental period for foreigners is higher than for residents of Spain - 10 versus 5.5 nights.
