4G technology will cover all metro lines in Madrid by 2020

It was announced that the Madrid Metro authorities had signed an agreement with the main mobile phone companies according to which 4G networks will become available across all the metro stations. The local authorities will invest €16 million in this project.  The first stage of the project will have been completed by May 2019 and will cover lines 4, 6, 7 and 9, while the second stage will take place in the summer 2020 and will include lines 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 12.

The project is designed to provide an access to the internet and improve the quality of connection throughout the journey.

Passengers have already been using the mobile internet on line 2 since 2013, when the agreement with Vodafone was signed. Today, there are two lines, 2 and 8, completely covered, which is 154 metro stations or 51% of all the stations. This percentage is expected to be increased up to 61% and by the summer 2020 the whole metro will have 4G coverage.
